The problem with lakes, especially in the Midwest, is the
uncontrolled siltation rate. Traditional farming techniques can
produce 6 - 12 tons of topsoil run-off per acre, per year. This
topsoil becomes suspended in the high velocity water flow during storm
events and does not settle out until it reaches a low velocity state.
This is the downstream lake or reservoir. Topsoil conservation has
made some strides in the last few years with no till farming methods, but
the problem still exists. Uncontrolled upstream development is also
a problem source for siltation in lakes The first thing to remember when conceiving a dredging plan for your lake is the ultimate disposal site. The proximity of this spoil site will have a dramatic effect on the dredging price. Permitting is also important. Please refer to the permit section for a better understanding of this issue. |
